POL114H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Ottoman Empire, Collective Responsibility, Wall Street Crash Of 1929
Document Summary
In east asia, colonizing was quite different because they were less vulnerable to colonialists since they were more developed ex; india. Europeans imposed the notions of boundary on territories. In africa, colonies only arbitrarily drew lines, so there were a number of different ethnicities in a boundary and civil war would ensue. Lastly, in the middle east: ottoman empire made it difficult to access asia. Ottoman empire collapsed because of it"s affiliation w germany and other countries in wwi. All of this is important because state systems are beginning to fall apart ex; in africa and in the middle east. This is expected, because failure of the state system results in failed states. It was a weak foundation in the beginning. Many africans were still in civil war even after independence. The same is true within the middle east. Causes were outside affiliations, weak state economies, droughts these all create a weakness within the state.
