Perception: selection, organization, and interpretation of sensory input. Psychophysics: how physical stimuli are translated into psychological experience. Psychophysics: concepts and issues: sensation begins with a detectable stimulus. Fechner: the concept of the threshold (there is no real absolute threshold so) Absolute threshold: where the stimulus is detected 50% of the time. Just noticeable di erence (jnd): smallest di erence detectable. Weber"s law = size of jnd proportional to size of initial stimulus. Psychophysical scaling: fechner"s law = size of perceptual experience is proportional to the number of jnd"s that the stimulus is above the absolute threshold. Signal-detection theory: sensory processes (sensitivity) + decision processes (bias) Subliminal perception: existence vs. practical e ects sensory adaptation: decline in sensitivity. Reversible gures and perceptual sets demonstrate that the same visual stimulus can result in very di erent perceptions. Optical illusions: the power of misleading cues.
