In canada until 1986 it was an open vote, which meant that mps would tell who they were voting for (the speaker) Since 1986 the election became secret ballot, that meant the party leaders can no longer monitor how their mps vote for speaker. And punish them for the leader"s favorite candidate. The speaker presides over meetings of the house, acts as a referee.
