People who would have had most incentive was europeans to trade and get goods (asia) Strong current going south across the atlantic, which christopher columbus used. First recorded voyage was through the northern current through scandinavia. Norse (vikings) settled in newfoundland in 10th century. Crossed by accident, but also moved because rise in temperature. People cultivated more food, increasing population, requiring more land. Warmer temperatures in northern oceans opened sea travel. For hundreds of years, main source was from norse sagas (epic poetry) First written down in 13th century, but recorded much older tales (4-500 years older) Erik thorvaldsson/erik the red moved from norway to iceland in late 8th century. From blood feud, erik banned from iceland for 3 years. He then explored and settled in greenland. In a few years, norse greenlanders explored idea of more land/settlements. Leif erikkson, son of erik, moved west and arrived at vinland (wild grapes)
