Document Summary
Written records often thought to divide prehistoric vs historic era. Issue: certain peoples would be considered to not have history. Members of the non elite class in areas with writing. Northrup: human history began when cultural change shot past biological evolution as the primary force shaping humankind"s relations with the rest of the world. Length of fingers thought to belong to women. Ideas of social organization inspired by the san people. San people do not value materialistic goods and have no belongings. Only thing that makes them unhappy: stingy antisocial people who do not share. Issue: societies change, modern people can give us some information but we cannot be sure that societies before history lived the exact same way. The jesuit relations and allied documents on the aboriginal/native people. Issue: we are unaware of the religious/political worldviews of the writers and do not know the intention the writer has with writing the text.
