Document Summary

Ggr227 lecture 7 ocean and fisheries. Oceans annual uptake of carbon dioxide is 1/3 of anthropogenic emissions and slow down the increase in atmospheric co2. Uptake is dependent partially on ocean temperature and is predicted to decrease as a result of climate change. Uptake of co2 from atmosphere, dissolved co2 then stored in various forms in deeper water, dead organisms, ocean sediments and coral reefs. The ocean carbon pump will never be fast enough to completely compensate for current carbon dioxide rates. When carbon dioxide dissolves into the ocean from atmosphere it forms carbonic acid. Oceans are a sink for atmospheric co2 but it comes at a cost of acidification leads to dissolving of calcium carbonates: however, it is predicted by the end of this century ocean acidity will increase 150% Oceans rarely anoxic [thus little methane emissions] Oceans are the source of much of our atmospheric oxygen: due to productivity by plankton.
