Agenda: what is dna, how does abacard hematrace work, what is str and how is it used for dna fingerprinting, pcr, gel electrophoresis, capillary electrophoresis. Inherited from mother and father: chemical blueprint of life (height, eye colour, etc. , the dna in each cell of an individual is identical, unique to individuals. Chromosomes are thread like structures, located inside the nucleus of animal and plant cell. Each chromosome is made of protein and a single molecule of dna. Sex chromosome is either xy male, or xx- female. Can be composed of a chain of millions of bases. Skin, sweat, blood, semen, saliva, tissue, hair, urine, etc. Screening for human blood: hb is short for hemoglobin, heme and polypeptide make up hemoglobin, heme consist of porphyrin ring and iron. Abacard hematrace- targets human hemoglobin: ab (antibody) is coated on test strip, t line is test, and c is control. 2 lines on test confirms human blood (similar to pregnancy test).
