Process whereby a coroner (investigate sudden unexpected deaths) or forensic pathologist (experts in diseases and injury) seeks to understand how and why a person died. Deaths that appear to be from unnatural causes or natural deaths that occur suddenly or unexpectedly. Concerns are raised regarding the care provided to an individual prior to death. Goal: confirm clinical diagnosis, presence and extent of disease. Study disease and injury that resulted in sudden death. Perform forensic/medical legal autopsy goal: determine cod and confirm mod. Y-shaped incision begins at the tops of each shoulder and extending down to the pubic bone. Surgical procedure to determine cod and confirm the mod. Sex, weight, height, age, color hair, physical condition. Burnt and partially burnt gunpowder residues, soot, vaporized lead, dirt, etc. Span and density of fdr may provide insight into firing range distance. Pattern can be revealed with visual, microscopic or chemical examination. Typically used in gunshot wound or stab wound cases.
