FSC239Y5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 99: Cluster Analysis, Homicide, Centrality
Document Summary
Trying to establish based on the location in a crime series, to determine the likely profile or area where the offender lives or visits. First identify pattern, then next step is series. Basing it on target selection process of the offender. Case: offender targeted pre-teen girls in toronto area. Would take the girls in his car, drove around the area in different colors and in an suv or minivan. Hunting area: 300 sq/km, narrow it down to 15 sq/km. Either offender lived in that 15-square km or started his hunt there. It"s not predicting where the offence is going to happen, it identifies the peak profile which represents the offender"s residence or significant routine activity space. Offenders make decisions in a rational fashion -> they think things through. Conditions in which geographical profiling can be used: in a complete series. Cannot be a commuter (goes somewhere else to commit crime) or marauder.
