FSC239Y5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Forensic Science, Product Rule
Document Summary
Anything that can be used to prove an assertion. In forensic science, evidence is used to tie suspects to scenes and victims. Establish that a crime has been committed. Or link the crime to the victim, or the crime to the perpetrator. To be used effectively, its presence first must be recognized at the scene. Recognition -> collection -> analysis -> reconstruction. The analysis itself is broken down into phases and types. The more physical evidence is recovered, the more likely a theory of what happened during the crime can be established. But can"t collect and submit everything for analysis. Selectivity is governed by the collector"s knowledge of crime lab techniques, Lacking this knowledge can lead to evidence being overlooked or being collected improperly. Petroleum products - lighter fluid, diesel, gas. Plastic - bags, rubbers, and other polymers. The examination of physical evidence is done for identification or comparison purposes.
