Princely and imperial india: durbars and the construction of new delhi. Key dates: 1876-78, great famine in india, most sever of century, due to drought and raised prices of food many people died. Important context for imperial ceremonies: 1885, 1905. Inspired later grander ceremonies: 3 great durbar ceremonies held, 1877, painting imperial assemblage held at delhi, valentine prinsep. Largely due to bright colours: related to politics saw it as a sneaky rebellion by indians to undermine. India was becoming a struggle: this event was held at exact moment of great famine, wanted to reinforce britain"s imperial claims, demonstrate permanence of british rule, public declaration of queen as princess of india. Iconic site chosen site where they had previously been under siege: loaded political context, 1903. Coronation durbar , bourne & shepherd: all kinds of representations circulated around world postcards, film, cards, paintings.
