Art by the people for the people. Modernity and the spaces of femininity by pollock. Female painting often showed tender domestic scenes. Often shows women cut off from the world through the use of space (areas not available to women) All elements lead to the idea of female imprisonment in social society. Little girl in a blue armchair, cassat, 1878. Man + woman in a theatre box. The theatre was a place to go to be seen. Social event where women are like spectacles. The woman is not actively looking at us or others. Man looking at her intently (seeing her as scandalous) Cassat engaging with the issue of male gaze. She is like the bar products, another thing to be bought. Front woman, legs replaced by legs of bench, like a prison. Miss lala at the cirque fernando, degas, 1879. Denies us penetrative access into their space. Pastel work is shown (no visible brush strokes)
