ENV201H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Adaptive Management, Petri Dish, Hydroelectricity
Document Summary
More than just casually adapting to situations. Adaptation in a general (adapting if certain management approaches aren"t working) vs. specific sense. Core ideas: action over inaction: an excuse that we don"t know anything as an excuse for inaction; put off making decisions until we know everything (an excuse not to act) Adaptive process: circular management phase vs. linear; continual process of evaluation, re-evaluation, moving forward, continual monitoring & assessment. Evolutionary adaptive management: isn"t really adaptive management, typical linear phase and then monitor, not a circular or on-going approach; most am takes on an evolutionary approach. Passive adaptive management: different from evolutionary because you begin with the position that this is going to be an ongoing cycle of chance. Active adaptive management: fully implementing am, actively choose to implement. 2-3 policies/experiments at a time, testing, and seeing which is best. Active: starting with one idea vs. several and changing along the way.
