How the course will be structured this year. Recycling yards, mine tailings, quarries, refineries, dams, factories. We are consciously or unconsciously aware that the world is suffering for our success. Dependence on nature to provide materials for our consumption vs. concern for the health of our planet an easy contradiction. Image as reflecting pools of our times. Biotic (living things, like animals, plants, forests, soils, etc. ): refers to any living component in the environment. Abiotic (nonliving things, like continents, rocks, oceans, clouds, icecaps, etc. ): refers to any non-living component in the environment. Our built environment (roads, buildings, dams, factories, etc. ) Social relationships and institutions (governments, universities, religions, cultures, etc. ) Environmental sciences is not the same as environmentalism. Environmental science: pursuit knowledge about the natural world and scientists try to remain objective. How natural resources and processes support life (human and other) Environmentalism: a social movement dedicated to protecting the natural world.
