Document Summary

Chapter 5 - part 2. Exploitative interactions - relationships where one organism benefits, and one is getting harmed. Predation = individuals of one species capture, kill, and consume individuals of another species. Parasitism = parasite depends on host for nourishment or other benefit. Herbivory = animals feed on the tissues of plants. Parasitoid - will kill off the host eventually. Predators kill and consume prey. Feeding relationships structure food webs. Only way plants can protect themselves. May not kill the plant, but affects its growth and survival. Thorns, spines or irritating hairs. Other animals: protect the planet. Coevolution = antagonistic species become locked in a duel of escalating adaptations. Cold war term from military in the us and weapon build up. Traits evolve to overcome the defences for the other. Alice in wonderland metaphor - evolving as fast as you can to keep up. Communities are structured by complex interactions among species that exert selective pressure on each other.
