Document Summary

Demographers study population size, density/distribution, age structure, sex ratio, birth/death rate, immigration/emigration rates. Demography is central to understand how society is moving forward. It"s the study of factors determining size & structure of population. 2 ways to look at growth rate: per capita rate = (br + immigration) - (mortality rate + emigration)/population size. Negative = population shrinking (thus mr + emigration is greater) Zero = population isn"t changing in size (when population size is 0) Positive = population is growing (thus br + immigration is greater) Absolute rate = size of a population at a given time/size of a population at an earlier time. 1 = population isn"t changing (no growth, the number would be 1) The growth potential in ontario is going down. Many individuals in young age groups results in high reproduction and rapid population growth. This is a good way to find how half the population is younger and the other half is older.
