All three men are westerners who moved to the east. The great gatsby: a warning about adopting characteristics of who we feel we should be. Don"t adopt things without looking at them critically: jay gatsby is a walking, talking fiction. Were looked up to as role models. He dedicated himself to an adolescent idea of what being an adult meant. He never moved past this idea: explains some of his more childish moments in the novel.
