Later paper becomes cheaper, newspaper becomes more popular, people are hungry for information. People are not only interested in classical stories like greek stories. People wanted to read about normal things; realism. Novel makes it accessible for people of other classes, not only rich ones. Popularity of travel, travelling to places in the so called new world". Two young women being read to by the gentleman, older women is the governess of these two young women and is watching with nervousness towards them. Fixation on the book, quite a scenic background. He is so fixated in the reading that he is not paying attention to the scenic background. He is showing his back, so he is oblivious to what is going on around him.
