Goals of the psychoanalysis: bring those unconscious feelings into conscious. Id, instinctual physical desire superego: norms and morals of the society, what is right and what you need to do to fit into the society, ego: mediate between rational and unconscious side. Used a lot of literature in his theory. Female child gets infatuated with the father and shifts that to someone like father. Is famous for falling in love with his image. Everybody has some kind of narcissims but according to freud it can become a problem. If you just focus on loving yourself then it can become a problem. A lot of symbols would have significance based on the person"s own life. You say one thing, but you mean another thing. Jokes about dead babies: they allow to express yourself that otherwise wouldn"t be possible. A parallel between psychoanalyst and a parallel between critics (going beyond the surface level meaning as critics)
