Lecture 1 - introduction to education studies - sept. 8th. Professionalization of teaching originated with a lot of theory (background) and practice. Practical aspect - "just tell me what works "- don"t wonder why etc. Tries to simplify and explain the world by getting new information when going into a new situation to figure it out: inductive. Tries to predict other things, like future outcomes - can use previous case studies to make sense of something else: instructive. Serves as a basis for action - theory helps u know what to do (link between theory and practice) Look at something that happens and say what is this - outliers (event that happens that doesn"t fit w theory so u must reconsider it) Considers the meaning nature and purpose of education. Ex - debates over what should be taught. Studies how the mind acquires knowledge & what pedagogical tools facilitate this process.
