Cct 222: political economy of communication, culture & technology. What political economy is about: money, power, geopolitics of communication: lower the taxes on import and export, labour: the factories in china & mexico. The silicon valley: environment: e-waste (technologies are thrown away after use, activism: popular after the arab spring. Political economy of communication will allow us to know how technologies are embedded in our social life. Political economy looks at the context of communication, culture and technology to understand the power relations they are situated in. It focuses on the crucial social relationships that surround a technology and govern how it functions. Political eco(cid:374)o(cid:373)y will allow us to try to u(cid:374)dersta(cid:374)d how (cid:373)usic is produced, spread how (cid:373)uch artists are paid. 56% of canadian media companies (bell ctv, rogers, qmi) are vertically integrated by market. Google owns the search engine, gmail, yt, maps, chrome.
