Today"s lecture: short lecture, print and audio, text - any format or medium. O"shaughnessy and stadler state: texts produce meanings by referring to the world outside themselves and by using pre-existing codes of representation. Audience members have to have knowledge of the real world to which the text refers and knowledge of the conventions of the text"s medium (its photographic, cinematic, or televisual codes of representation). (p. 93) Audience members must have knowledge of this and the real world. Polysemy: text will have multiple meanings to different audiences and they also have embedded readings intended for the reader. Think of the role of the audience. Reception studies: they look at how an audience is active, how they are active users of what they use and how they interpret the media.
