Unconscious interference: your brain will still process things the same way even if it"s told differently making assumptions from incomplete data according to past experiences. Artificial reverberation: cues about echoes to calculate distance - echolocation. Our ability to make sense of music depends on experience and neural structures. Our brains learn a kind of grammar that is associated to our culture. Non-verbal communication: effecting communication by means other than words (i. e. body language) Verbal communication (always more arbitrary): arbitrary coding gives word to action jump . Non-verbal communication: iconic coding gives word to image (not arbitrary because there"s still room for interpretation, intrinsic coding when the action is literally done to give word to an action. Communicative environment: influence of non-human factors on human transactions (i. e. furniture, lighting) Primary functions of non-verbal communication: expressing emotion, conveying interpersonal attitudes, presenting one"s personality to others, accompanying speech for the purpose of managing turn taking, feedback, attention.
