It"s universal (associated with being a human) -> freud. It"s cultural (horrors aren"t part f human nature but apply to specific people in specific places) -> snyder. These two things aren"t absolute, it"s more productive to think of them on a spectrum. Horror films don"t only reflect real life horrors but also transform them in: cinema, genre, ideology. A certain flavor of horror: an emotional experience (dread, creepy, eerie, blood curdling unsettling) Things that are familiar are somewhat named unfamiliar (strange: they all come out of our past. Childhood: beliefs we had as children, infantile complexes. Past as a species: beliefs we had in our primitive culture. All the things that make things uncanny come from our childhood and our primitive beliefs and complexes. Things that are hidden/secret and are brought to light (return to consciousness: things that we have left in our unconscious comes into our conscious mind.
