Determine how long various stages will take, cost and experience, and expertise required. Ensure all necessary data collected at appropriate level of detail. Received ethical review clearance, appropriate permits, and permissions. Site chosen is right for addressing your research questions. Past and present environment- bias in research from disturbances, decide how you will excavate your site from present site. Flora, fauna, topography, geology, water sources- use different techniques based on topography and geology.
