Document Summary

We make inferences using background knowledge (common ground) The difference: the knowledge that we share and the knowledge that we know that we share. Understanding even the simplest utterance requires the hearer to make inferences. I"m going to sneeze ; added the meaning: right now! He"s a dog ; added the meaning: he behaves like a dog (using your imagination) John has two children ; added meaning: he has two children and no more (he may actually have 3 children) The meaning of the words is not enough for understanding. We must make inferences (requires a lot of physical and cognitive work) Described the cooperative principle as a basis for inference. Even if you are ghting with someone, you are cooperating. Be truthful (violating the maxim of quality when saying he"s a dog ) Do not say what you believe to be false. Do not say that for which you lack adequate evidence.
