Kinship is based around symbols and codes. Kinship diagrams are basically family trees, lineage, descendant lines. I. e. your father"s sister is your blood relative (consanguineal) (aunt), but her spouse is also your relative (affinal) (uncle) Generally, affinal relationships are weaker than consanguineal ones. Generally speaking, this is not always the case. In this diagram (in the slides), the female (red triangle) labelled ego is the individual we are looking at. The red ones are part of her lineal kinship, the others are collateral. Generally where you eat, sleep, procreate, raise children, etc. Group or network that are somehow related to one another. Often times, people in the family don"t always have to be living together\ In canada, the legal definition describes very basic parent / child relationships.
