All states rely on the accumulation, management and distribution of economic surplus. Small territories which were often enclosed by a fortified wall. Often agriculture would be practised within these walls. Metal work was the basis of military evolution. Fair degree of trade between the urban and rural, and even between the early city states. Ancient mesopotamia = one of the earliest city states in existence. City states often fight with each other for control. City states were the precursor to larger more territorial states. Development of craft specialization and the use of politics. Agriculture was usually protected by the state. Distinct urban and rural dichotomy / economy spheres.
