Act as a social body (corporation of ancestors) People that are part of lineages usually are able to name their lineages pretty far back. Lineage housing can go 25-30 generations back. The unity of a lineage usually has an economic basis in production or subsistence. Land ownership/ usage of land is vested in lineage. Lineage linked to some kind of economic survival. Not all lineages have equal social status. Usually, societies that have lineages must marry outside of the lineage. Although some societies prefer to marry within the lineage. People forget the exact connections they have to people because the lineages diverge so much as generations and generations are added. Derived from lineages, when lineages become so diverged that it is difficult to keep track. Sections of the lineage break off and become clans. Usually societies prefer to marry outside of their clan. As lineages become bigger, you get more and more clans.
