ANT101H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Dentition, Lorisoidea, Vertebrate
Document Summary
Ant101 -- primates: our contemporary relatives & the basics of primatology. The study of non-human primate biology & behavior. Do not pass through similar stages during embryonic development. Organisms do not share a common ancestor. More often reminiscent of a common environment and environmental pressures, similar or same function. Wings of birds and the wings of bats different anatomy/structure. Structures possessed by 2 different organisms that arise in a similar fashion. Pass through similar stages during embryonic development. Arise in same fashion, arise embryonically and important for they display an evolutionary relationship. Primate characteristics: arboreal organism that lives in trees (generalized limbs) Forward shifted foramen magnum hole at back of head. We have a rather globular head while other animals, such as dogs, have snouts/pointed. Climb in upright position, thus greater upright position is preferred for brachiating. Collarbone acts as strut for collar joint at front to scapula on shoulders to help stability, strength and to keep shoulders back.
