Why is family violence so hard to measure? possible methods for gathering data on family violence include: Easy to minimize and justify violence in the household - this is your family. One-sided reports - bias by the police officer. Bias of court members - personal issues or past can affect the outcome. Court is usually focused incident instead of story as a whole: short , in depth surveys with small sample size. Small sample is unrepresentative: long surveys with small sample size, short surveys with simple questions and large sample size. No follow up questions: focus groups.
