1. To highlight that the ICTs of today are entirely rooted in those before them
2. to create a lineage between the role of the internet today and our past experiences with

The First ICT
-printing press (Gutenberg)
-1440s
-Gutenberg:
•a goldsmith
•bringing together a variety of technology
•moveable type
-create a typeface in metal that had some resiliency and put together words.
-put ink on the word (mechanical device) and press on any surface
-everything is backwards so it has to be input backwards
-allowed distribution of mass media
-before Gutenberg, if you want to make another copy it has to be manually written.
-a lot of information must be spread orally
-lead to distribution + new forms of media
-printing press spread to 276 cities at the end of 1400s
-people had to be more literate after the printing press
