Black skin, white masks (bswm) was originally called an essay for the disalienation of blacks . Fanon had personal experience as a black intellectual/revolutionary in a white word the colonizer/colonized relationship. His family was part of the black bourgeoisie on martinique. Members of this social stratum tended to strive for assimilation and identification with while french culture. The central metaphor/concept of the book is that black skin must wear white masks in order to get by in a white world. There must be an adaptation by the person. Americans develop a double consciousness living under a white power structure: one that flatters that structure (recognition) and one experienced when among other black men.
