2 (1968: the protestant ethic and the spirit of capitalism (1904/1905) There are multiple ways that power can be exercised. It"s not as straight forward as class relations. He believed that marx"s ideas are too simplistic because it is impossible to reduce the organization of society to one single dimension the ownership or non-ownership of the means of production. Karl marx wrote about how the capitalist mode of production operates. As human beings, we need to produce our means of subsistence. Classes are determined through economic and material means (their relationship to the market). The bourgeoisie own the means of production and are thus in a position to benefit most from the system. The proletariat have to sell the only things they own, their labour, on the market. For marx, the unfairness of capitalism is that the vast majority of the workers spend their lives producing wealth which is ultimately not theirs to own or enjoy.
