New utilitarianism - did not fully develop it but was a transition for this new concept (a combination of romantic, socialist and feminist ideas) His wife"s death (harriet taylor) impacted his writing. Utilitarianism: the best action is one that maximizes utility (defined in many ways, usually well being of sentient entities) New utilitarianism: feeling is as valuable as thought (there are other aspects and things that drive us to do things other than simply utility) Raises the question of societies role in bringing liberty or taking it away. The only reason for interfering with another person"s liberty is for self protection. Wants to see the individual as sovereign (the individual independence is absolute, has the right to rule over their own body and mind) Looks at society in relation to the individual.
