SOC 2106 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Extortion, Rock Machine, White-Collar Crime
Document Summary
Things in negotiation can be considered deviant. Law enforcement: largely dependent on government administrators/inspectors. Dependent on level of government cutbacks or subsidies. Rcmp are focused more on organized crime, drug traf cking, terrorism, etc. Security measures: contract security personnel, closed circuit tv. Screening and education: increased background checks, personality testing, seminars. Penalties are seen as a business cost (those who have the money don"t care) Companies move to unregulated areas (having factories in developing countries without human rights, environmental or labour regulations) Detect crimes, convict and punish offenders as a warning to others. Us research indicates that public and judicial tolerance of white collar crime is decreasing. White collar offenders still make up a small percentage of all convictions. Organized crime: structured organization, which systematically provides illegal goods and services. Hierarchal (president, vp, treasurer, secretary, full patched (regular) members, prospects and hang arounds etc) Goals: pro t, power, monopoly on illegal goods and services.
