Mental illness in canada: approximately 1 out of 5 people is likely to be diagnosed with a mental illness at some time during their entire life. In other words, six million canadians will have a mental illness during some period of their lives. Family: social conditions linked to mental illness, family problems. Interpersonal conflicts: economic/financial difficulty, roles conflicts, role ambiguity, role overload, significant life events (loss of loved one, birth of a child, new job, loss of job, retirement, marriage, physical illness, etc. ) Ideas of thomas scheff: mental illness is a label, this label contributes to behaviour that could be viewed as evidence of mental illness, mental illness is the result of a role imposed upon individuals by others. If someone is labelled as mentally ill this label may become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
