Document Summary

Soc2103 division of work, labour part 2. The most time crunched people were dual income couples with children 5 and under. Time left over after paid work and care is affected by the number and age of children. Part time job: able to have more than one job, get through school, but has low pay, no benefits and may get skipped over for promotions. Flextime/compressed work week: reduces stress, take your time when needed, but people work extra hard or more time. Job sharing (1 position where two people split it and both get benefits) Telecommuting (a virtual office): useful for people who have a long commute or couples who don"t want their children spending a long time in daycare. Shift work: schedule days on/off (usually afternoons/nights), deteriorates marriages (creates problems) They suggest that: parental leave is extended, childcare needs to be more convenient and affordable.
