Lecture 1: sociological perspectives to health, illness and medicine. Most of us think that the medical sense has the truth. We have a hard time grasping that it"s a perspective (a way of seeing things) 19th century- the enlightment period (everything started to evolve, ex. Germ theory: medicines main focus is to find a solution: many vaccinations that exists in order for us to be safer, status of medical professional increased medical perspective (not everyone can give or prescribe medicine (ex. 1950s medicare: the government will pay for the health care of its residence. 1960s physicians are a gateway of our medical care: they decide who needs what. What does sociology have to do with health and illness. Sociology increases our information between the individual and the society. Critiques a lot of the medical perspective: makes sure we can get to the best medical care that we can have.
