Desire for more freedom (high educaion and internaional tourism) Social jusice (civil rights movement, ani-war movements, gay rights movements) What is a social problem: wright mills disinguished between personal troubles and public issues. A social problem is an alleged situaion that is incompaible with the value of a signiicant number of people who agree that acion is needed to alter the situaion. Factors: rise of the naion state, rise of transnaional eniies, & pax (peace) americana. Previously failed atempts to embrace all of humanity. Failed due to: was not wholly incorporaing, people lacked knowledge or was tainted, narrow views civilized and barbarian, one way transmission of culture. Modernity: divide between pre-modern and modern socieies, the shit towards industrialism and emphasis upon predictability. Relexivity (thinking about you posiion in regards to your research/your own thoughts) Neo-liberalism: factors leading to the rise of neo-liberalism, facets of neo-liberalism.
