Document Summary

Soc 1101- lecture 4: modern social theory continued. Social scientists rely on small groups of people, a sample, to reflect the thoughts, feelings, behaviour of a larger group of humans, the pop. Samples can be more or less representative of a larger population. Probability samples (ex: random samples) are designed to represent the larger pop. Non probability samples include convenience and snowball samples. Human behaviour is too complex to allow sociologists to predict any individuals actions precisely. Because humans respond to their surroundings, the more presence of the a researcher may affect the behaviour being studied. Social pattern change constantly, what is true is 1 times or place may not hold in another. Because sociology are part of the social world they study, objectivity in sociological research is especially difficult. Subjective interpretation is always an important element in sociological analysis. Case study: in depth investigation of i or few phenomena.
