Hegemony is a process that is constantly negotiated and renegotiated and must be won. Hegemony is used as a way to explain how particular features of social organization come to be taken for granted and treated as common sense. Ex: work hard and good things will happen. Most study of sociology is done by men and reflects mens understanding. Men have social power and an interest in maintaining their power over women. Gender inequality results from unequal power of men and women under capitalism. Capitalism uses women as a reserve army of labour in times of shortages and to keep wages down. Marriage, under capitalism, is a means of ensuring the perpetuation of private property through inheritance. Women are the reproducers and maintainers of the labour force.
