The family as an agent of socialization and a social institution. The family is the first and most important agent of socialization. A set of organized rulse and statuses and behaviors and patterns and well defined relationshopds that help meet the basic needs of society. Social institution is not the same of as a social group (specific group of identifiable people) it is concrete. An insitiutaion is made of rules and standardized ways of doing something it is more abstract. When we talk about our own family or someone elese family we are talking about a social group. When we are talking about the family we are talking about a social insituation (statuses oraganisined in well defined relationships) Not all families fit the model of the ideal family. Family is te most important thing isn the lives of most families. The typical family from the early 50s the typical family was a mom, dad and two kids.
