Social structure: stable pattern of social relationships that exist within a particular group, changes slowly through social interaction. Social interaction: process by which people act toward or respond to other people. Hard to accept because we like to think we are individuals, not act on mutual dependency and always within a group: depend on the city for maintenance and roads, companies for buildings, taxpayers. We are a web of mutual dependency. Whatever people do, they are dependent of others. Functionalist: social structure is dependant for survival of human beings. Conflict: we must explore deeper underlying structures. Racism, sexism, ageism etc. , are social structures rank. Components of social structure: status, roles, groups, social institutions. Status: socially defined position characterized by expectations rights and duties. Recognized social position, you can"t be the only person who acknowledges your status. Guides our behaviour in any setting (rights obligations and duties)
