Document Summary

Mobilization : the process of organizing and gaining collective control over resources. Recruitment : the process whereby individuals become committed to a cause. Free-rider problem = the problem that individuals can benefit from a public good without participating in its pursuit. Movements need to find ways that the benefits of participating outweigh the costs. Focus on the meaning of protest, for individuals and the broader culture. People will act if they feel there is an injustice that warrants action in spite of any personal cost to them. It is the job of movements to convince them of this injustice using a framing strategy. Movements need to convince us of the rightness of their cause. A collection of ideas and symbols that illustrate both how significant the problem is as well as what the movement can do to alleviate it. These tools help to motivate people to act, not only to convince them of the right-ness of the cause.
