Categories of communication disorders: language disorder, speech sound disorder, childhood onset fluency disorder, social (pragmatic) communication disorder. In infancy: selectively attend to parental speech sounds. By 1 can recognize and say a few words. Perceptual maps are formed when we hear phonemes. By one we have our perceptual map completed. Difficult to train into a different language at this point. Ability to learn and store phonemes as well as rules for combining the sounds into meaningful units of words. Phonological awareness: broad construct that includes recognition of the relationships that exists between sounds and letters, detection of rhyme and alliteration, awareness that sounds can be manipulated within syllables. A deficit in phenology is the chief reason that disorders develop. Deficits in expression despite normal comprehension of speech. Typically notice in children who have limited vocabulary in relation to age. Language abilities are substantially below those their age.
