PSY 4105 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Genetic Disorder, Dsm-5, Prefrontal Cortex
Document Summary
A physician was writing about something he was seeing in his patients, it was conceptualized as a morality issue. Early 1900s: inhibitory valerian, cognizant choice to misbehave, defective morality. In uenza epidemic 1917-1926 brain injured child syndrome was used to describe overactive children or children who deviated from the norm. 1940s/1950s: concept evolved to minimal brain damage and minimal brain syndrome. Late 1950s: adhd was called hyperkinesis and was attributed to low poor ltering of stimuli entering the brain, called hyperactive child syndrome. 1970s: de cits in attention and impulse control, in addition to hyperactivity were seen as the primary symptoms. 1980s: increased interest due to the rise in stimulant use, and the effectiveness in stimulant medication for hyperactive medication. Recently: clear neurobiological underpinnings and an emphasis on problems of individual self regulation. We see adhd in media more than other disorders in child psychopathology. Tons of treatments on this disorder but not all empirically valid.
