It"s unknown: change in statistics depends on, changes in public and professional awareness, changes in legislation and definitions affect reporting rates, emotional abuse is more difficult to prove than physical abuse. What kind of people abuse/neglect their children: older studies showed, young and unmarried, mainly from lower ses, coping is poor in abusive parents, poor self-esteem, perceive parenting as stressful, isolated, mental health/substance abuse problems.
