Warning function - damage or about to be. Any condition that is supposed to bring only acute pain but persists. Can have periods of interest pain and then release. Gradually intensi es as the condition gets worse. Disease process can be the cause of the pain. Tissue damage can be the initial acute pain. Occurs in response to tissue damage or noxious stimuli. Operant pain is reinforced by a persons environment. People in pain will try to alter the behaviours to alleviate the pain. Either prevent it or keep it from getting worse. Can fear that if we discontinue it will make our pain worse. We get attention from this pain response. Report high levels of satisfaction from social support exhibit higher levels of pain displayed behaviours. Can maintain or increase their expression of pain. Disturbances in sleep are a major problem. 79% of those in moderate or severe chronic pain complain of it.
