Antisocial personality disorder is so studied because of its impact on behaviours in society. Borderline personality disorder is so studied because it can be functioning or completely dysfunctional. It has a continuum of symptoms / severity. 6-9% of the population will have one or more personality disorders during their life. Personalities tend to be formed at ages 6-8. According to the psychodynamic approach, personality disorders result from disturbances in the parent-child relationship, particularly in problems related to separation-individuation.
